Originally Wetzeliella symmetrica var. scabrata, subsequently (and now) Wetzeliella symmetrica? subsp. scabrata.
Questionable assignment: Williams et al. (2015, p.318).

Holotype: Shaw Chenglong, 1999a, figs.31–33.
Age: Eocene.

Original description (Shaw Chenglong, 1999)
Cyst intermediate to large, compressed peridinioid, with four prominent appendages, processes numerous, tubiform, with bifid or entire tips, fairly long (up to 16 µm), relatively small and closely clustered on distal part of horns (2-5) µm, surface view with scabrate ornamentation; endocyst smooth, thin-walled and broadly elliptical in outline. Intercalary archeopyle, operculum sometimes attached along anterior margin, generally free.
Stratigraphic occurrence: Eocene (OK-1 well, 1788m).
Dimension holotype: 147 µm long, 125 µm wide, endocyst 85 µm long, 80 µm wide, processes 3 µm -16 µm long.
Dimensions: Overall 112-147 µm long, 66-125 µm wide, endocyst 75-85 µm long, 70-80 µm wide, surfacec features with tubiform processes, tubiform processes up to 16 µm long (n=3).
Derivation of name: Latin, scabrata refers to the scabrate ornamentation of the cyst.
Remarks: The new variety resembles Wetzeliella symmetrica Weiler in having a roughly similar outline; however, it differs in having a smaller size and in having scabrate ornamentation.
