Protoellipsodinium touile
Protoellipsodinium touile Below, 1981
Holotype: Below, 1981, pl.11, fig.16a-c; Fensome et al., 1991, figs.1-3 - p.761; figs.1-3 - p.765
Paratype: Below, 1981
Locus typicus: Iguer n"Tazad, Morocco
Stratum typicum: Aptian (Gargasian)
Translation Below, 1981: LPP
Original description: Below, 1981, p. 111-112
Diagnosis: Proximochorate, non-tabulated cyst of elongate ovaloidal habit. Hypocyst larger than epicyst. Paracingulum dorsally rarely indicated. Parasulcus absent. Archaeopyle precingular, type P(3""). Numerous, equally distributed, acuminate, solid processes, proximally interconnected by low ridges, or standing isolated. Their length corresponds with 1/6 to 1/8 of the central body diameter. Membranes smooth.
Dimensions (microns): Holotype: length of central body 35µm; width of central body 26µm; length of spines 3,5-5µm. Other specimens: length of central body 32-44 (38)µm ; width of central body 24-36 (29)µm; length of spines 2,5-4µm.
Description: The poles of the elongate form are always rounded, rarely the apex is pointed. The "enlarged" archaeopyle is middorsal. It has an arch-like outline. The numerous, thin, proximally only slightly broadened processes are solid and continuously narrow up to the tip. Very long processes are distally weakly bifid. With 2,5 to 5 microns, the processes attain a length of 1/6 to 1/8 of the cyst diameter. They are often interconnected by ridges, without their arrangement indicating parasutures.
Affinities:
Below, 1981, p.111
Protoellipsodinium touile differs from P. seghiris in he spine-like, acuminate processes. Between both species, forms with low, about 2,5 microns long, distally narrowing, but rounded processes occur. Compared to the protruberances of P. spinosum, the processes of P. touile are solid, more numerous and clearly shorter.
