A new dinoflagellate cyst species from Valanginian samples of the Prealpes Medianes in western Switzerland. Aprobolocysta trycheria sp nov, is described. This ovoidal form possesses an archeopyle typical of the genera Batioladlnlum BRIDEAUX, 1975, emend and Aprobolocysta DUXBURY, 1977, emend Its vermiculate wall may form tattered ridges and low-relief projections, and occasionally shows a separation between two distinct layers. Batioladinium vangranosum (DUXBURY, 1977) DAVEY, 1982b and Aprobolocysta trycheria sp nov. appear to be critical forms showing a morphological intergradation between Baholadinium and Aprobolocysta The wall structure is here considered to be the most important character to make the distinction between these two genera. Aprobolocysta is emended and restricted here to forms having a wall constitued by a dlstinct periphragm and endophragm, possessing or not apical and/or antapical horns or protuberances. Batloladinium is emended and extended here to forms having a wall constituted by a single autophragm, possessing or not apical and/or antapical horns or protuberances. A specific determination key is proposed for the genus Aprobolocysta.
