Caligodinium sp. of biffi and manum, Biffi and Manum, 1988
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Biffi and Manum, 1988, p. 184]:
Description:
Cyst proximate, subsphaerical to slightly ovoidal, usually with surrounding flocculent material. The wall is very thick (4-5 µm) and the surface deeply punctate.
The paratabulation is expressed only by the apical archeopyle, which shows the pattern of other Caligodinium species (Pl. 3, fig. 13) even if the very thick wall sometimes prevents a complete development. The operculum is usually attached.
Dimensions:
Mean values (bracketed) and extremes (n = 8): cyst breadth 58(60)62 µm; cyst length without operculum 56(60)62 µm; cyst length with operculum 66(68)70 µm.
Affinities:
Caligodinium sp. differs from C. pychnum and C. amiculum Drugg in having a deeply punctate rather than a retirugulate or psilate surface and a thicker wall. We maintain an open nomenclature because of the low number of specimens recorded and the very limited occurrence: few samples in the Montebello d'Urbino Section.
